A mushroom spore is a unicellular organism responsible for the reproductive processes in mushroom producing fungi. Spores are located on the underside of the mad mushroom cap, in the gills, teeth or pores of the mushroom. Gills, teeth and pores refer to the shape and size of the spore-producing area of the mushroom. Many mad mushrooms can be identified only by examining the color of spore prints or by examining spores and tissues under a microscope.

Long-term exposure to mad mushrooms spores can lead to lung inflammation and acute lung disease. Symptoms of acute hypersensitivity pneumonitis typically occur four to six hours after you leave the area where exposure took place. Symptoms may include chills, fever, cough and shortness of breath.
